Vintage Repair / Puppendoktor

In the late 1960s, my grandmother gifted this little doll with a sleigh to my mother. It was probably part of a putz village, but she never got more parts other than this one.
My mum took very good care of the doll and later gave it to me, although I always was a big destroyer of her porcelain dolls.
Surprisingly this doll survived throughout the years with me, until I took it out from my Christmas decoration suitcase … just to find her in pieces and removed from the cardboard stand. So I glued on her cap and body, just adding a bit of new hair made from twine. Then I removed the wax stains, painted everything white and added white glitter on the stand and the tree. Now, she is ready for this season, although I probably have to find her a new dress soon, since the old dress really lost its color. Perhaps I should also make a putz house for her, add some woodland animals and bottle brush trees …

DIY (and free): Faux Mantel / Deko-Kamin

While living in US, I once saw these fibreboards that someone had put on curb… apparently they were part of packaging for a new TV set. I brought them home and started to build up a fake (and flat) fireplace with acrylics color and twinkle lights.
I actually had thought about it for a long time, without coming to a conclusion on how to do it, but now I tried to figure something out along the way, while working with my free material.

 .

First I had to build up the structure, which had to fit directly between the heater and the kitchen door. I mostly used a saw, glue and a stapler. The inside of the fireplace is just black craft paper, which was easier to work around the electric outlet.

 .

Then I started painting it all out. The outer parts got painted in a mixture of different brown, orange and black tones… making it look a bit like wood. I further added a ‘tile mosaic’ in white and brown.
The inner area took me the most time to paint, since I wanted to make it look less artificial. I actually went to see real fire places and tried to mimic the different brick tones and even the ashes that discolour the bricks around the fire. Once everything was dried, I finished it off with a clear coating on top.

 .

Then I brought another piece of free wood home and my husband cut it for me. I stained it brown, added hooks and we fixed it on the wall as the rim of my mantel. It also helped stabilizing the fireplace as such.
I decorated the hooks with Christmas ornaments. I always wanted to hang up personalized stockings made from burlap rice or coffee bags for each family member, but simply never got around doing it (maybe one day :)

 .

I didn’t get a clever idea for my faux fire, so I used a tiny wired house, instead - that was laying around as an unfinished project. I made this house from found materials, as well.
Inside the house I added twigs, pine cones and twinkle lights and additionally some flickering LED candles.
All electric wires were hidden inside a clementine wood box underneath my fire.

 .

Sometime after the first Christmas I found a beautiful wooden cut out, stained it and eventually glued it onto my fireplace, which was therefore dressed up to become a permanent decoration throughout the seasons and Christmasses.
And while I sadly couldn’t bring my fake fireplace with me while moving overseas, I was able to get this cut out along, which is nowadays a decoration on my piano :)
